Eligibility

Eligibility for the  National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia is determined through a process that considers a person’s disability and its impact on their daily life. Some key points :

  1. Age Requirement: To be eligible for  the NDIS, you must be under the age of 65 when you apply. There are separate support systems for people aged 65 and over, such as the Aged Care system.
  2. Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
  3. Disability Requirement: To qualify for the NDIS, you must meet the following disability requirements:
    • Have a permanent disability or a disability that is likely to be permanent.
    • Have a disability that significant impacts your ability to participate in everyday activities and requires support.

  4. Early Intervention Requirement (for children aged 0-6): Children aged 0-6 can access the NDIS if they have a developmental delay or a disability that is likely to result in a significant disability. The aim is to provide early intervention to support their  development.
  5. Geographical Location: NDIS eligibility also depends on your location. The NDIS has rolled out across different regions of Australia in stages. You must live in an area where the NDIS is available.
  6. Evidence and Documentation: When applying for the NDIS, you will need to provide evidence of your disability and its impact on your life. This may include medical assessments, reports from healthcare professionals, and other relevant
     documentation.

It’s important to note that meeting the eligibility criteria is just the first step in the NDIS process. Once eligible, you will go through a planning process to determine the supports and services you need. The NDIS aims to provide individualized support plans tailored to your specific needs and goals.
